Swing Home, Sisters! 2001 A Great Success

The SHS High School Class of 1984 celebrated its first grand reunion with a big bang at the 41st Floor of the Discovery Suites in Pasig City.  Sixty beautiful women shared in the fun of reminiscing our adolescent adventures.

Event Highlights:

The "Walang Kupas Award" was bestowed on the alumna who seemed to have just stepped out of our high school classroom, mainting her youthful glow, mannerism and outlook.  The finalists were:   Alice de Guzman, Marilou Manalansan-Yap, Noncy Simbulan-Rodriguez, Ruby Vita-De Castro.  The award went to Cherry Lactao.  Cherry, who also had to travel the longest way to be at the reunion (she came all the way from Isabela!), attributes her youthfulness to a unique secret -- she married early.

The "Bongga Ka 'Day Award" was given to the alumna who impressed many with a head-turning transformation.  The finalists were:  Melanie Gaite and Rose Nava.  The award went to Anna Evidente-Mirandilla.  Anna, who has long dropped the nickname we remember on her volleyball uniform (Cha-Cha), humbly insisted that she is actually very domesticated.   "Day off ko ngayon." was a memorable part of her acceptance speech.   (Pahabol:  Malou Domingo-Barrameda deserves our aggregated compliment for the enviable svelte figure).

The "Prolific Mom Award" was presented to the alumna who has best kept to our good Lord's bidding to "multiply".  The ever-radiant Leah Magallanes-Pastores won the award for being a wonderful mom to Zoe (1995), Ashley (1996), Haley (1999), Zach (2001).  Other alumna who deserve the recognition but were not present were:  Eva Cabatingan-Cajucom (with 5 kids) and Bernie Mesa-Cebrero (with 4 kids).

Inspite of the some technical difficulties (the waiters plugged her keyboard into a 220V outlet and ...poof!) Angeline "Dioky" Diokno made many smile, laugh and cringe at a slide show of old high school photos.  We will just have to wait for the next reunion to experience Dioky's heart-warming rendition of our old 80s favorites.

The "Battle of the Sections" which tested the collective memory of the alumnae while clustered into senior year sections, made many remember the old high school rivalries.   But while the competition was tough and all the sections put up a good fight, Pamayanan (led by our Salutatorian Marcy Walet-Arcinas) emerged as the night's victor.   It is certain that Sections Pananagutan (led by Teta Montecastro-Mejia -- runner-up), Sandiwa (led by Ayie Ramos-Sampedro) and Bayanihan (led by Ayeen Vicencio-Salvador) will be aching to grab the crown next year!

100 percent of all 59 attendees agreed to be members of the proposed Batch Association.  The body also elected the first set of Board of Trustees and Officers -- they are:  Alice Bustos-Orosa, Ninya Castillo-Gan, Angeline Diokno, Beng Doria-Velarde, Betty Lugay-San Luis, Leah Magallanes-Pastores, Mona Magno-Veluz, Beverly Mozo-Mansueto, Raquel Neis-Zamora, Deidre Rodriguez-Corpuz and Marcy Walet-Arcinas.  Let's all wish them the best of luck!

More than 50 raffle items and prizes were given away  -- with Chevy Siazon-Swing bringing home the top prize (a mobile phone).  And thanks to the generosity of all the present, the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales (amounting to approximately P 15,000) will be the Batch Association's start-up fund.

Planning on the Way for 2001 Grand Reunion

Our Reunion Organizing Committee met for the first time on 22 September 2001 at Cafe Mischka in Quezon City to lay out initial plans for our first Grand Reunion later this year. And after serious pre-work, they met again on 13 October 2001 to finalize plans for our first Grand Reunion titled "Swing Home Sisters!" on November 24, Saturday at the Discovery Suites, 25 ADB Avenue, Pasig City (one block behind SM Megamall). Festivities will begin promptly at 1:00 pm.

The event promises to be one where we can all rave to the music of 1980s, relive our girlhood fun with games, presentations and special awards; and most importantly, revel in the company of long-lost friends. Raquel and Dioky are at the helm when it comes to the night's much-anticipated program.

As of mid-October 2001, Deidre and Mona were pleased to report that the alumna database (which started at 25 names in September 2001) has almost tripled -- we now have contacts with approximately 70 girls -- and the network continues to grow!
